Artists like Carrie Cleveland are such a rare treat. Unmistakably of their era (70s) and of a certain homegrown ilk, but beyond that almost totally undefinable. Her free spirited swerves from gospel belting, to organ-y exotica, to driving dancehall grooves is such a great capture of a great artist and a great time and place (Bay Area) to be alive. It’s this exact type of effortless musicality, unconcerned with what things evoke beyond just a great song and an even better feeling, that so much of the modern world’s outsider art tries to replicate. This is the model, with the sauce, goated etc.
