Taking some time today to honor the life and legacy of the great Sonny Rollins, who passed yesterday at the age of 95 in his home state of New York.
Rollins was indisputably one of the most important and influential artists in the history of jazz music. His saxophone playing, composing, and most notably improvising, made a mark on American music that forever changed the sound of our country.
Beyond his 60+ albums as a bandleader, Rollins recorded and performed with hundreds of fellow landmark artists including Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane.
Sonny Rollins outlived all of his fellow musicians depicted in the historic Great Day In Harlem photograph, which captured 57 of the world’s greatest jazz musicians, all of whom defined 20th century music in their own right.
Today marks what would have been the 100th birthday of Miles Davis, another jazz artist who changed music forever. Paying tribute to them both and giving thanks for the music and the message that these two artists left with our world. ❤️
